Launch Ramps

There are three public launch ramps on the lake, one each at the east and west marinas and a big new public launch near the dam on the western shore. The Marina East ramp is basically a stretch of blacktop running into the water with no pier and is probably not going to be an acceptable choice for any but the smallest boat or the most adventurous skipper. It does feature a small, level parking area in which to rig a boat if you do decide to launch from it.

Access to both the Marina West and its launch ramp is via Atwood Lake Road off Route 212 about a half mile west of the dam. Keep an eye out for a little ice cream stand on a hill and turn there. The marina offers a huge grass field (used for storage during the off-season) in which to rig your boat. The two-lane ramp is divided by a short concrete pier with a couple of iron rings to tie your boat to. Before it was supplanted by the new public ramp, this was the main launch facility for the entire lake and I've used it many times for boats up to 26 feet long with no problems…it's basic but it will get your hull wet. The marina reserves the right to charge for parking in the grassy lot but, if you plan to rent a transient slip or do other business at the marina or restaurant, they may be willing to waive the fee…stop into the office and talk to them before you launch.

Since its construction in 1999, the park-operated launch just east of the dam on Route 212 has become the primary facility for visiting trailer boats on the lake. It features a large and level parking lot with plenty of room to rig a sailboat and two ramps with a decently long pier. A small courtesy dock with half a dozen slips provides a convenient place to tie up to stretch your legs or use the public rest rooms (flush toilets but no sinks). The launch ramp is free and open 24-hours.

The launch ramp at the Marina East is nothing more than a stretch of blacktop. The ramp at Marina West is a little more sophisticated. Note the pumpout dock to the left of the ramps. The public launch near the dam will probably be your best choice, whether you have a boat or not. The lot at the public launch has plenty of room to rig your boat.
