Sailing has always been a game of compromises. Most of us started out with a small boat on a trailer. It was easy to haul around behind almost any car and relatively painless to rig and launch. We had tremendous freedom; we could drop our boat in any body of water we had the desire to explore and be sailing along in relatively short order. Of course the more easily trailered and launched the boat was, the more cramped the accommodations and limited the creature comforts. It was more like camping out than cruising--not even camping really, since few backpackers I know are willing to tolerate a toilet in the middle of the tent! Everyone has different ideas of what they need aboard their boat. While cruising in a trailerable boat will always entail a certain degree of "roughing it", we each have our own minimum comfort level. Personally, I would never consider travelling for more than a day or two without my trusty laptop and an MP3 player loaded with at least a couple of books on tape. Others might consider these essential (to me) items to be a complete waste of space.
