Things to Do on the Land

There are a lot of things to do on the water in Erie, but one of the coolest things about being a trailer sailor is that you're not limited in what you can do ashore by where you can dock your boat. Once you've had your fun on the water, you can unhitch your trailer at any campground or motel and drive inland to see the sights. Here are some shoreside attractions you might like to check out during your visit to Erie.

Located near the entrance to the state park is the shiny new Tom Ridge Environmental Center. Except for the theater, which charges admission, it is free to the public. In addition to the biggest bass you'll ever walk into, it features numerous exhibits explaining the unique ecology of the region. Don't miss the observation tower, which gives an excellent view of the surrounding lake.

Across the street, you will find Waldameer Park and Water World. Waldameer Park is the best-preserved example I've seen of an old-time amusement park. Both parking and access to the park itself is free and you can stroll around the grounds and stuff yourself with carnival food to your heart's content. You can either purchase a day pass for the various rides or buy individual tickets. Parks like this used to exist in almost every community, but sadly, have now become almost extinct. The kids will enjoy the rides, and those of us over 40 will enjoy the memories this place brings back of our own long-gone local parks.

If you're a geek like me, you like to learn at least a little bit about the local history of the places you visit. You can embrace your inner bookworm by taking a short walk from Dobbins Landing up State Street to visit the Erie County Historical Society. Just across the street you will find the Erie Art Museum, featuring works by local and international artists. If you happen to be in town on a Wednesday, admission is free. A little culture never killed anybody, right?

South of downtown, the Erie Zoo features 400 animals within its 15-acre park. If you're traveling with little ones, treat them to a few hours at a museum created just for them at the expERIEnce Children's Museum, featuring over 50 "please touch" exhibits.

If you'd prefer a little more excitement than the museums and zoo can offer, Presque Isle Downs & Casino may be more your style. They feature 2000 slot machines in addition to the ponies and are available to take your money 24 hours a day.

If you'd like a fun night out that doesn't include one-armed-bandits, JR's Last Laugh Comedy Club features stand-up headliners from around the country. Finally, when you get hungry, the twin retro-50s restaurants of Sara's and Sally's, located at the entrance to the state park are hands-down the coolest places to eat in town. The biggest problem will be choosing which one to pick.

The 2-story Tom Ridge Environmental Center is very child-friendly...and it's free! The view from the observation tower of the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. The center is next door to Waldameer Park. Waldameer Park brings back a lot of memories. I used to throw my kid brother off a train just like this one at Playland Park in Akron Ohio. Admiral Barb spends some time in the stocks.
The Erie Art Museum is a short walk up State Street from Dobbins Landing. One of the twin retro-50s diners of of Sara's and Sally's.
