A Trailer Boat Cruising Guide to Sandusky Bay
Dining and Entertainment
Once again, a comprehensive list of restaurants in the area would be impossibly long, so I will limit this section to either places with waterfront access or ones that I've found to be particularly good. If your tastes run toward traditional chain restaurants, head down Route 250 and you'll come across the main shopping district just north of Route 2. Here you can have your pick of all the mainstream eateries you're used to back home.
I've always felt that nothing refreshes a cruise in a small boat like a visit to a dockside restaurant and Sandusky Bay has some fine examples of these waterfront rest stops. As mentioned in the Facilities for Boaters section, Lyman Harbor operates a large dockside restaurant in addition to a small marina. The restaurant features a full-service menu and a regular schedule of live bands.
Two dockside restaurants also operate out of the Cedar Point marina. You can dine at either Bay Harbor or Famous Dave's BBQ from the Cedar Point Marina docks (check in at the marina office for a dock assignment). You will be required to pay a dock fee in advance but it will be refunded with a minimum purchase at either restaurant. If you have an overnight transient slip at Battery Park Marina, Damon's Grill can also be considered a dockside restaurant, as it is located right on the grounds.
Sandusky Bay is in the heart of Ohio's wine country and you can sample the local spirits at the Mon Ami Winery in Port Clinton. Mon Ami also operates an upscale restaurant on the premises with a regular schedule of live music.
Speaking of upscale, the Angry Bull Steakhouse wasn't cheap but they served me one of the best Porterhouse steaks I've ever eaten. Located a good 18 miles east of Sandusky, they're not conveniently located to anything, but if you like a good steak as much as I do, they're worth making a special trip for.
Last but not least, Toft's ice cream is a local staple in the area and, while you can get it at various parlors and grocery stores throughout the region, there's no place better than the little outlet store located right in their factory west of downtown Sandusky. Here you can sample every flavor they make and enjoy your cone while sitting in an antique bench.
